Having complete control yet allowing complete artistic license over things has always been an important factor in every single thing I have ever done concerning my own works, or others that I took enough interest in to care about. There is something deeply satisfying about sinking your teeth and fingers into something tangible, something more than malleable, and making it entirely yours, no matter the consequence or depth of process. I have always been introduced to things in a very succinct way, and music was no exception. While living in France, in a small, quaint city named Nice, I began something with the same odd ended qualities of its birth city. Though, I had no idea what it would grow into.
The following is a brief yet detailed account of some of HOTH's highlights.
January / February - 2007
A friend and I find an unmarked box in his basement. Inside of this box are four hundred blank cassettes tapes inside of blank, unmarked cases. We share a look, and apparently, a thought. We begin asking around, to our friend's bands (sticking within the realm of black metal / doom / etc.) and such, and soon enough, we single out a handful whom are willing to let us record their practices or a few songs onto our cassettes with the shoddy recorder / player we had found in the trash a few days prior. Its buttons stuck and the microphone had a hole in it, but we successfully recorded, packaged, and distributed two hundred and six of the four hundred cassettes. We even sold a few of them. All in all, there were about twenty different albums spread between them, and by now, they are probably all long forgotten, lost underneath basement drawers or the Twilight realm of nowhere, but regardless of all of this, those two months instilled something in me that I have never lost and which I do not think I ever will - the need to create, not just for myself, but for others.
And then, all was quiet. But just for a little while.
Septembre - 2007
I make my arduous first trip to the United States, due to difficulties and sickness of my surroundings. I land in Washington, and the foot / bus / hitch hiking travel commences. After a few weeks, I end up in Ohio. I hunker down in an abandoned building near a railway station, and by the miracles of wireless internet cards and signal pires, I am able to begin my plotting from the internet. A friend introduces me to the website known as Myspace (I had no idea of the power of its evil at the time), suggesting that I upload my own music, which he had previously heard through the sharing of tapes. I did as he suggested, finding it to be a rather useful tool. That is how 'Bicycle Sighs' came to be. After browsing for a little while, and seeing the many record labels sprouting up all over the place, a memory flashes through me, that incredulous feeling of accomplishment, and the fire is back in brew. I start up the Myspace page for (what I decided to name as) Lightning Paw Media, and end up... doing absolutely nothing for quite a while.
After a slump, I finally begin to approach friends and people whose music spoke to me, and offered my 'services' to them. I begin to build up a slow and steady roster of musicians and bands who have dedicated themselves at least partially to Lightning Paw.
January - 2008
Living in New Jersey now, with fellow musician and good friend James Phillips, ideas are once again had. And once again, they fall through, due to living arrangements and constant difficulties.
Lightning Paw is changed to Domovoi Media.
March - 2008
Domovoi Media is decontructed into four sub categories - Domovoi Records, Domovoi Films, Domovoi Publications, and Domovoi Arts, while keeping under the mother name of Domovoi Media.
August 25th - 2008
Haute Magie Records earns its place in the Domovoi Media family, threading its seeds with the same roots upon which the original label idea began, heavy and extreme music. Domovoi Records becomes the vessel for all other types of music in the Domovoi family.
February 17th - 2009
After finally coming to my senses and realising that five labels with too little differentiation are far too many to organise and handle, I ultimately deconstruct Domovoi Media entirely and change the mother label's name to HOTH (He Of The House) Media, with Domovoi Records and Haute Magie Records underneath it.
